  2. Your translation of the verses 41 to 47 of Chapter 18 of the bhagavad gita seems to be different from how it is usually translated in popular translation texts. The phrase svabhavam-jam that comes in these verses means "born of one's nature or behaviour". Who or what is born? Not the person. From a person's behaviour, the qualities of each varna are born. In other words, a person's swabhavam(behaviour, Gunam) decides the varna, not birth. This is how it is translated in the bhagavad gita translation I have read, namely "Bhagavad Gita as it is" by Swami Prabhupada. I also checked the meaning in google search. All the links that refer to these verses have the same translation. I have also checked with some sanskrit scholars whom I know. They, too, confirm this. Can you give me the reference for your translation?

  3. So, let us assume your translation is correct . It means the varna is not by birth but by ones behaviour. If varna#4's behaviour changes like varna#1, will you be able to convert a person from varna 4 to varna 1? And vice-versa too?

    1. Yes, definitely, according to this translation of the bhagavad gita. The classification is purely based on the behaviour of the person, and has nothing to do with his/her birth. But if we come to the question of how well this classification system was followed practically in ancient Indian society, there are numerous issues, and as far as I know, there doesn't seem to be a definite answer to this question, though we do know for sure that this behaviour-based varna classification deteriorated so badly that varna became caste and based on birth, leading people like Periyar to fight against it. All I am claiming here is that the translation that I have read does not advocate a varna classification by birth.

    2. Vinod : Forget about the varna/caste system which exists today. Let us talk about the Krishna/Rama period itself. If you answer the below questions you will understand the real meaning of the verses 41 to 47 of chapter 18 yourself that it is by birth.

      1) Why Krishna did not stop the atrocitities against Ekalaivan & Karnan when they exhibited the skills of other varna's? ( if it's only because of behavior)

      2) Why Rama killed Sambukan when he exhibited the skills of varna #1? ( Uttarakandam of Ramayana)

Now coming to present time, whoever supports B.Geethai as a national book and believes that the varna system is based on behaviour. Few questions.

      1) Can we make Sudras as temple priest if they have the skills?( this law is in the court for last 40 years)

      2) Why Krishna turned back to show his face to a lower caste devotee who stand outside of the temple (Uduppi Krishna) instead of inviting him inside the temple?

    3. Sure, I will answer your questions, but doing so does not make me "understand" that the verses mean varna is decided by birth. In fact, I feel quite the contrary. Let me explain.

      1) You are asking about Ekalaivan and Karna here. First, when you talk about atrocities against karna, I presume you mean the incident where Dronacharya arranges a friendly tournament between the kuru princes. Karna comes there, displays his skills in archery and challenges Arjuna to a duel. Kripacharya refuses the duel, saying according to the rules of duelling, only a prince can challenge Arjuna to a duel. Note the words here. Kripacharya says only "Prince" and not "Kshathriya". He is not talking about any varnas here. And that is why Duryodhana also concentrates on making Karna a king of Anga desam and not just a Kshathriya to get even with Arjuna. This is one point. Another thing to be noted here is, where is Krishna in all this? Krishna is not even mentioned here. Did he come to the tournament? How can he prevent any atrocity if he is not even in the scene?

Coming to Ekalaivan, even here, Krishna is not in the scene. Only Dronacharya and the kuru princes are in the scene here. So there is no question of why Krishna did not stop the atrocity here too!

Also, since we are talking about Karna, I would like to remind you of the incident where Parasuram curses Karna. Why does Parasuram get angry with Karna? Because Karna lied to him that he was a brahmin. How does Parasuram find out that Karna is a kshatriya? Not by enquiring into his birth details. But by his behaviour. When an insect stings him and he bears the pain, and his blood oozing out wakes up Parasuram, he says that no brahmin can bear such intense pain. That is the quality of a kshatriya, a warrior. This is the varna classification system. If varna classification is by birth, then Parasuram should have asked Karna which varna his parents were, to decide Karna's varna.

      2) Rama killed Sambukan not because he was a sudra exhibiting skills of brahmins, but because he was trying to use those skills to enter heaven with his mortal body. This act is forbidden for ALL humans irrespective of varna in all of our ancient scriptures. A good example would be Viswamitra, who tried to send a king(Trisanku) to heaven along with his body and when refused, created Trisanku sorgam.

Coming to present time, why are you talking about supporting bhagavad gita as a national book? I never raised this issue in my comments, and I never ever supported or proposed bhagavad gita as a national book.

      1) In my opinion, yes, anyone who has the skills can become a temple priest. But why do you ask this question here? Our discussion was about what the bhagavad gita says about the varna system of classification. It looks like we are going away from the topic of discussion here.

      2) Here, you are talking about a temple legend. Personally, I have a lot of issues with these temple legends. You are asking me why the idol(udupi krishna) did not call the devotee inside. But my first question would be how did the idol turn towards the window in the first place? Even in Mahabharata, Ramayana and the Puranas, I have lots of issues with certain stories there. For instance, how did Krishna lift the Govardhana mountain? Temple legends are full of such "magical" stuff which I find hard to digest. So I think it is better to avoid such legends when we talk about something real such as the varna classification system.

  4. Vinod : Thanks for the detailed reply. I think you got the big picture that Krishna is NOT a god :) .

If he is really a GOD, he should have made himself available at all the places where the atrocities happened. (Thoonilum iruppar, thurumbilum iruppar) especially during the period he was alive as a character in Mahabaratha.

    My Final take:

    1) Assume the B.Geetha was told by Krishna as per your translation and he is a GOD: Why did he not stop all the things that are happening against his preachings in Geetha TILL NOW ? To fight this we had to have Thanthai Periyar, JyothiRao Phule, Ambetkar , etc., Don't tell me they are the avatars of Krishna.

    2) Assume the B.Geetha was written by a human being in order to force the varna system on the society in the name of GOD : This is the high time to throw this book away and bring back equality in the society.

    1. Ganeshvel, I think you are assuming a lot of things here, and wrongly too! From my very first comment, I never said anything about Krishna being a God or man. That is totally out of my topic of discussion. Now you say I "got the big picture". For your kind information, I never "got" it. I had that idea even before we started this topic. What does all this have to do with finding out the correct translation of a bunch of sanskrit verses??? From the very beginning you are hell bent on diverting away and away from the topic wherever possible, making this a totally unhealthy debate. Your so-called "Final take" is only proving this point again! Till now you have not even given me even one reference where your translation of the gita that the varna classification was by birth is given, and you talk about Gods and avatars and such. Now you ask me another set of questions and tell me you don't want a particular answer. What sort of questioning style is this? So what if they are avatars of Krishna? During any philosophical debate, only philosophical answers can be given. The avatar theory is an age-old philosophical theory in Hindu literature. Why are you bringing all that into a simple discussion of the correct meaning of a sanskrit text? If you want to come to a debate, come with an open mind and facts and philosophy. Otherwise all discussion is only a waste of time. So, like you say, we will finish our conversation here. Its no use.

  5. Dear Sp.V. Sir,

I am sure that you don't utter a word without proper analysis. You have read Bhagavad Gita chapter by chapter and verse by verse - more than many Brahmins as far as I know.

I'm able to understand what you are trying to convey here. But unfortunately, people with biased views are not able to understand.

    Dear Vinod and Ganeshvel,

Thanks for actively participating in this discussion. We all may agree to these two Thirukurals:

    எப்பொருள் யார்யார்வாய்க் கேட்பினும் அப்பொருள்
    மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவு.

(Meaning: To discern the truth in every thing, by whomsoever spoken, is wisdom )

    -----------------
    எப்பொருள் எத்தன்மைத் தாயினும் அப்பொருள்
    மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு.

(True) knowledge is the perception concerning every thing of whatever kind, that that thing is the true thing.
    #355
    ----------------

Since my knowledge about Bhagavad Gita and Sanskrit is limited, I am going to use "logic" behind the discussions here.

Before logical view point, I tried to check this Chapter 4 verse 13:

    http://www.bhagavad-gita.org/Gita/verse-04-13.html

According to Kesava Kasmiri's Commentary the explanation is :

... This verse refers to the four orders of Vedic culture exclusively being thebrahmins or priestly class, the ksatriya's or the royal and warrior class, the vaisya's or farming and trading class and thesudra or the servant classs. These were created according to the natural qualities of their prenatal disposition and classified accordingly to their corresponding birth.

Which is in accordance with Professor's remarks here.

    ----------------
Here is the logic. In practice, can we find a Dalit becoming a Brahmin and marrying another Brahmin? Forget about marriage, can a Dalit become a "Brahmin Priest" in a temple?

These things are impossible because all these are according to "Birth" - as far as people are concerned. Just because a guy learns all traits of a Brahmin won't be accepted by the society as a Brahmin.

Again, one may argue - "these were not told in Gita, but people interpreted wrongly". Fine, then on what basis the society agrees/disagrees these "birth" based castes? If you ask Brahmins, most of them would say "They were told in Gita/Veda. Period."

This is why people like Periyar and Professor Subavee are sharing these messages & explanations to common people.

Vinod, you must understand why Ganeshvel is jumping the gun. The moment we say that "Gita doesn't tell that people belong to a caste because of birth", then many people who "wish to believe" would jump to acknowledge all the misconceptions created because of Hindu religion. Then we may go back to square one.

Please refer Thiru Kural #423 and #355 above - again.

    Long live good people.
    Long live humanitarian feeling.
    Long live Tamil.

    Viru

    1. Virupakshan, First of all, chapter 4 verse 13 does not say that the four varnas are "classified accordingly to their corresponding birth". There is no phrase or word in that verse that links varnas and birth. All that verse says is that the four varnas are created by God. In other words, it says that the four varnas are not artificial, but are quite a natural phenomenon. Please note that I am claiming all this by looking into each Sanskrit word used in the verse, finding their meaning using a Sanskrit to English dictionary, and then translating them to English and referring them against some translation texts.

So I find that it is Subavee and Ganeshvel who are biased in their opinion of the bhagavad gita and are using their arguments to promote their biased view. For instance, nowhere did I see verses 41 to 47 of chapter 18 translated the way Subavee has translated in his post. And in my very first post in this blog, I only asked him from where he got his translation. Till date, I have not got an answer for that from either Subavee or Ganeshvel.

We all know that, in practice, Varnas are treated like caste and, indeed, that is the reason for the multitude of castes existing today in Indian society. But just because the concept is misused in practice, are we justified in saying that the concept itself is wrong?

As far as I am concerned, people need to be told the truth. What bad thing will happen if we tell people "Gita doesn't tell that people belong to a caste because of birth", since that is the truth? Just because some selfish people misinterpreted the gita to make people think that varnas are by birth does not mean now people like Subavee can tell the same lie to substantiate what they believe. Misinterpretation will never help remove the superstitions created by religion. We will definitely not go back to square one by telling people the true meaning of gita with respect to the varna system, namely that gita does not advocate a varna system by birth. Instead we will only go forward to a better philosophical stand. That is true rationalism, and I follow that path.

  7. Vinod:

We are not trying to promote the biased view. I can understand your anxiety whenever we talk about those verses in Gita.

Whoever wrote Gita was very clever and intelligent enough to push their agenda by using generic words and meanings. That is how they provided the immunity to people like you to still argue in favour of Gita.

You cannot just ask for a specific word to prove that the varna system is based on birth. You need to consider all those verses in a context to understand the hidden meaning. It simply grouping people and asking one group to work for other group in the name of God.

People like you succeeded till 19th century by successfully blocking the majority people from even reading these books.

When we wanted to get rid of social evils, we started looking in to these so-called holy books ( Gita and Vedaa). Don't forget the fact that the classification of varna started in Rig Veda itself.

Please come out of the shell and apply your critical thinking to get the hidden meaning.

Probably you need to buy a specs from Erode ;) just kidding....

Ganeshvel, It's no use talking to prejudiced people like you. You are so prejudiced that for you, anyone who doesn't agree with you is irrational. So I am not going to waste my time responding to your comments here or anywhere else. This is my last reply to you.

My intention was not to hurt you but to confirm my stand against Varna system.

I am only against the Varna system and not against any individual.
